News for International Guests

Hello to all who may be interested in attending the 75th Anniversary Meet / Lake Tahoe in 2027 from overseas!
The Organizers of the Meet are very excited to host a truly international meet in 2027. To that end, we are offering a number of services to those considering coming from overseas, with or without Healeys, via our International Concierge Service. First, let me introduce myself. I am a member of the Austin Healey Club of Southern California and the West Coast (US) Representative of the Austin Healey Club of America (both sponsors of the event).
Over the last fifteen years I have organized six international tours for US Healey owners ranging from seven to thirty-five cars. We have visited Europe/UK four times (three European Healey Meets), New Zealand and Canada over the years. All these tours involved shipping vehicles, five times by sea. Needless to say, I have learned a bit about what it takes to organize an international tour which I am happy to share with you.
Designing, organizing and executing an International Tour is a big job and requires much advance planning. I am here to help.
VEHICLE SHIPPING
Probably the most intimidating part of planning an International Tour is the shipping of vehicles. In all but a very few cases, this means shipping by sea. Let us look at the logistics and formalities.
First, consider that three big Healeys or Sprites fit in one 40´ shipping container. The costs are largely “per container” regardless of the number of cars, so organizing groups in multiples of three is the most economical. I do not recommend Roll On – Roll Off service due to the potential for damage.
Second, you will need a forwarder to handle documentation, loading, unloading, storage and possibly insurance. I recommend using ONLY forwarders who ship vehicles as a specialty. Only they know how to properly load and secure your car to avoid damage. See below for our recommendation.
Third, for cars over 25 years old, there are no special requirements for temporary import and operation of your vehicle in the US. One exception is insurance, which is required before your vehicle will be released from US Customs. Do not assume your home country insurance will cover you or be accepted in the US. If you need to arrange supplemental insurance, please contact me.
Finally, consider timing. Your vehicles must be available when you arrive to pick them up or your entire itinerary may be thrown into disarray. But cars arriving too soon will incur storage fees. Working with an experienced forwarder is essential. If you can build in a little flexibility (like planning to spend a few days touring your arrival city) it can be very useful in overcoming unexpected delays.
PRE AND POST MEET TOURING
The US West Coast is a Healey touring paradise. From the cities to the Coast Highway to the Wine Country to the Gold Rush area, Yosemite National Park, the Sierras, and much, much more. Travelling halfway around the world to attend a weeklong event only is hardly a good use for your time and money. We recommend you allocate three to four weeks.
We will be pre-planning and publishing several optional Tour Routes for your consideration. Most of these will include hotel and attraction recommendations as well as Garmin-based SatNav directions. We are happy to help plan a custom adventure for you and your group.
IN, OUT AND FORWARDING
As mentioned above, the services of a specialized Forwarder are essential. We are therefore recommending Schumacher Cargo Logistics as the official forwarder of the 75th Anniversary Meet. Most importantly, Schumacher specializes in shipping classic vehicles. Their Los Angeles facility ships over 3000 vehicles per year.
Shumacher has locations and agents all over the world. They handle all management of their agents and do all the billing.
We strongly recommend shipping into and out of Los Angeles/Long Beach ports regardless of your pre and post tour plans. For larger groups, Schumacher LA can build a second deck into your 40´ containers, allowing up to six cars to be shipped home for the price of three.
